School Project
Year 6
Tooleybuc Central P12 2007

Self Portrait/ Oil on Canvas/ Plus Backup

The Tooleybuc School students have been without an art teacher for over 10 years before I came last year for 6 weeks (and last year we utilized my time mainly on the secondary students), which meant these children had never really been taught art before.

Over 5 intense short weeks (unfortunately some students did not have time to complete there Oil on Canvas), in time slots of 2 periods, I completed the project with the grade 6 students.   The other 3 lessons for the day I taught mainly pottery to grade 2/3 and drawing techniques/mediums to grade 4/5.

I had oil paints and one canvas per child (left over from last year) so I decided to do portraits on canvas with oil paints.

Class 1 colour wheel (mixing and blending colour)
Class 2 free draw portrait, shading and positioning of facial features, draw up grid
Class 3 grid drawings and more on shading
Class 4 (one ½ extra periods) trial small portraits, intro to “masters” portrait works in art books
Class 5 (one ½ extra periods) actual portrait

I was pleased with the results and the children really enjoyed the process and surprised themselves (and their teachers) with their creative abilities.   They all were really scared to put anything down in case they made a mistake, but they freed up and let themselves come out.

I have included the whole class’ canvas’ and selected grid drawings (unfortunately some students did not have time to complete there Oil on Canvas, but made a good start, with more time this project would be even better.)
